More than the Gunbarrel Highway
For the motoring enthusiest Australia has some top quality scenic drives. The list below hardly scrapes the surface of what Australia has to offer the driving tourist.
Bloomfield Trail:
You’ll need to own a 4WD for this road, but it’s definately worth it… running from the town of Cape Tribulation to Cooktown, it meanders through the world heritage rainforests of Queensland, where the coastlines are spectacular and the wildlife interesting and quirky. Petrol is pretty cheap in this part of Australia and the route is a reasonable size – so it’s a handy little number if you’re touching down at Cairns Airport.
Explorer’s Trail:
This route is perfect if you’re arriving at Adelaide Airport in the South or Darwin Airport in the North. Running between the two cities, the Explorer’s highway goes right through the middle of Oz, sampling in numerous varying
Pacific Highway:
For people arriving at Sydney International or Brisbane Airport then the Pacific Coast drive really is a must do. Wandering along the East Coast between the two cities, it follows the rugged coastline of the Pacific and the amazing ocean views. A well worn trail for surfers and sun worshipping tourists, it runs alongside countless beautiful bays, beaches and seaside villages. Another handy thing about this route is that there seems to be something to see around every bend
Fraser Highway:
Four Wheel Drive is again necessary for this one, but it’s a great drive, and a must if you are into fishing. Head off road to the sandy deserts and tropical rainforests of this unique island. Located just off the coast of Hervey Bay in Queensland, it’s a once in a lifetime off road experience for the adventurer
Mereenie Loop:
For the ultimate Outback experience, drive Northern Territory’s Mereenie Loop Road. The road links Alice Springs, the heart of Australia’s red centre, with the remote desert localities of Glen Helen, Kings Canyon and Uluru. The route through this dramatic landscape covers approximately 720 miles and should be experienced over three to five days to explore the numerous walking trails, side trips, impressive gorges and pristine swimming holes.
