Arran And Things To See And Do
Located in the mouth of the Firth of Clyde Arran (Isle of) is often referred to as “Scotland in miniature”. Similar to the country of Scotland the Isle of Arran has and incredibly varied scenery and a richly diverse range of flora and fauna, the island has moors, sandy beaches, glens, lochs, rocky coves and even features a lowlands and highlands region. Completing the likeness the island of Arran also features ancient standing stones, a brewery, castles, a distillery, museums and superb local produce and crafts. The Isle of Arran is a terrific destination for a vacation, especially for people who enjoy hill-walking and the likes. In the following article I introduce Isle of Arran attractions and a brief look at Isle of Arran hotel accommodation.
Brodick Castle
Brodick Castle is an grand red sandstone building which once belonged to the dukes of Hamilton. Situated some distance from the port of Brodick, encompassed by beautiful parks and gardens the castle was constructed upon the site of an ancient Viking fortress. Visiting the castle is a great family day out children will enjoy the adventure playground while older members of the family will be pleased by the castle’s impressive collection of fine art, porcelain and silver. You should allow a minimum of two hours to explore the castle.
Arran Heritage Museum
Arran Heritage Museum is housed, on the site of a small school, in Rosaburn, Brodick and is open from April-October from half past ten in the morning to half past four in the afternoon. Consisting of various buildings; a smiddy, cottage, farmhouse and croft (small farmstead) as well as milk house, laundry, stable, coach house and harness room and more. Exhibits reflect the geology, social history and archaeology of Arran.
Isle of Arran Distillery
Wherever you go in Scotland it seems that are never any great distance away from something to do with the whisky industry such as a distillery. The Isle of Arran Distillery employs traditional techniques in Scotland’s newest working distillery. The distillery is open to visitors from April-Oct and it features a restaurant and visitor centre.
Isle of Arran Brewery
The Isle of Arran Brewery is found next to main entrance to Brodick Country Park. Visitors can watch the brewing process via viewing gallery and observation windows as well as being able to taste the produce. The brewery uses modern high-tech equipment to produce an ale using natural ingredients without using artificial preservatives or additives.
Lochranza Castle
The final Arran attraction I want to talk about is Lochranza Castle located on the North coast. On first looks all you see is ruins 16th century tower-house but it is possible to gain access to the interior using keys from the Post Office (which is also the local shop). Once you are inside the L-plan tower you begin to see evidence of a grand structure.
Arran Accommodation
Finding the most suitable accommodation on the Isle of Arran should not be too difficult as Isle of Arran hotels can be found in the majority of the main towns (Lamlash, Brodick and Blackwaterfoot all feature at least one hotel as well as guest house accommodation). Establishments to look out for include the Glenisle Hotel and the Lamlash Bay Hotel (in Lamlash), the Auchrannie Spa Resort (in Brodrick,) and the Best Western Kinloch Hotel (in Blackwaterfoot) all of which have a superb reputation.
